Wasian Is Not the Umbrella

A plain-language map of the words — and who they leave out.

Wasian is a useful word for some people and a flattening one for everyone else. It names a specific mix: white and Asian. It is not a synonym for mixed Asian, and using it that way quietly deletes Blasian, Latinasian, South and Southeast Asian mixed people, Pacific Islander mixed people, adoptees, and anyone whose other side is not white.

How to use the words

Use the word someone uses for themselves. If you do not know, ask — or better, wait until they offer it. Directories and magazines should never assign these labels. They are opt-in, and they are allowed to change.

This site will not verify heritage. It will not rank people by fraction. The only authenticity test is whether the sentence is yours.
