The Roles We Still Haven’t Seen

Casting notices still ask for mixed-Asian actors the way a set dresser asks for a plant: something that reads as international without requiring a story.

I want the opposite. A character who is mixed because that is who they are, and whose plot is not the explanation of their face.

Stop hiring us as a dissolve

The dissolve is a useful film trick. It is a terrible job description. If the only reason I am in the room is that I can look East on Tuesday and South on Thursday, that is not inclusion. That is a visual effect.

What would help: sides that do not mention race in the first line. Directors who can say what the character wants. A directory where I can be found for the work I actually do — improv, voice, the unglamorous parts — not only for the fact of being hard to categorize.
